Responding to Prompts from last Lecture

(First Video) Aspects of learning: I feel as if the aspects of learning I have developed while doing this paper is the strong ideas I am now able to come up with the vast knowledge of the topics we talked about in class. With these 2 skills now mastered I feel as if this paper was something that helped me reach my goals for this class. Aspects that are less clear is if I’ll take my gained knowledge I’ve learned from this class and take it onto to other classes in the future. As for my final piece itself there is nothing I am still wondering about or want to add I feel like it is a very strong piece. My organization relates to my ideas because I must stay organized in order to continue with all of my ideas and can’t get them messed up. I will not in my opinion be able to put this into my piece.

(Second Video) I feel as if not giving us specific instructions is smart because it causes us to think more and put our brains to work. It allows us to interpret the work based on how we think about it and that can change the project completely for everyone. I liked how in this class we weren’t restricted to a main topic and this allowed us ti have open minds the entire course and I think that’s a great way to teach a class and that allows fir the students to get more joy out of a class as well if they are able to pick what they get to write about all the time.

(Third Video) For this class I feel like the work I did was very good and came from a lot of good ideas and teachings. I’ve grown as a writer from this class and I am grateful for that. Also I feel what you were saying about the photo caption project was very true. There were a lot of different questions being asked and people were a little confused but once we got down to what we were doing I felt like the class was able to make some solid progress and produce some great projects.

(Fourth Video) If we don’t have a word for something the physical object or something like a color still exist we just don’t have something that we can use to understand it within our language. No a facebook or snapchat invite are not acceptable for a wedding invitation and people would feel as if they really weren’t invited if they did not receive a formal invitation in the mail. I feel as if the connections you were making go right a long with the connections I was making with what you were saying. If you act like something is very casual people will precieve it as casual and the people running the event could be confused and not realize it was cause of the way they were sending the invites.

(Fifth Video) I think it takes a great mind to be able to write at a high level. I feel like this is true because your mind has to be able to wonder if you want to be a successful writer. You must be able to think of ideas before anybody else does and you need to convert that into words and make a great story out of that. I wouldn’t consider myself a good writer even though I have gotten better over the course of this semester, I just know that this craft takes forever to master and I doubt I will ever reach that stage but I know I will continue to try and get better.

Final Reflection (Friday Post #10)

Final Reflection

I was very hesitant before walking into this class on the first day because I had no idea what to expect or how well it was going to go. In high school my teachers would always tell us that English courses in college are very difficult and you will be doing things that you have never done before within the class. But, in this class it felt like we were going at a great pace and the projects we were doing were going right along with that. With the profile, the photo caption project, and the midterm reflection are things that I look back to after this semester to reflect on the things that really helped improve my writing over the last couple of months. Especially the photo caption list because it allowed for us to take topics that we really didn’t understand and allow us to come together to create a great presentation, but we’ll get into that later. So, as I am sitting here thinking of this class has truly made me a better writer, I think I can answer that question with a yes. I will go into more depth with the projects but in general I know that the things we have done in this class have tested my creativity and truly made me think of the things I wrote and even the topics that I chose to write about. That’s when I personally knew this class was doing something for me when I couldn’t even think of a topic to write about, I had to dig deep to think of something creative and then bring it to life and that’s why I truly believe that this class has made me a better writer.

So, as I begin my reflection on this semester, we must first start with the profile that we did in the first week. The first couple of days I had no clue who I was going to do because I didn’t really know any professionals down here to interview and was confused on who I should. So, I ended up interviewing my friend who had went to three different universities in three semesters. I felt that the story that I told was something that a lot of younger people could read and figure out if they are in the right place or college for them. I feel as though a lot of people now a day’s don’t go to the right universities for the right reason, they might go because that’s where all of their friends are going and they might want to feel included. Or we see their families have strong decisions over where they go because maybe they want their kids to go to their alma mater. There are just so many different factors that go into choosing the right college and I feel as if a lot of seniors in high school are rushing that decision and need to sit on it for a while longer. For example, my friend that I interviewed told me that the main reason he wanted to start out at Xavier was because that’s where his brother went to school and felt like if his brother enjoyed it there so would he. Well he found out halfway through the year that it wasn’t the place for him and needed to switch it. He now goes to Cincinnati with us and seems to seriously enjoy it a lot more and I think he found the university he was looking for all along. So, I think the profile helped me become a better writer because I allowed for me to do some investigating into who I should interview and in turn allow for a better profile because I had thought so long and harder on why I should interview him and what to ask him.

The next major project we did in this class was the photo collaboration project with our group. Now I found this project the most difficult of all the projects because at the beginning I really had no clue as to what I was doing. I didn’t know if we were writing a paper or making a presentation or doing a collaborative paper. But once I found out it was a presentation; I was kind of excited because I am pretty good at giving them. Our topic focused on the idea of toxicity in terms of social media. People that use social media know that there is a bad side and a good side of social media. The good side is allowing to connect to with your friends and be able to communicate online and have fun. But, the toxic side of social media is something we must deal with all the time and we must allow ourselves to either stay away from it or be the people that try and stop it. For example, there’s always these bot accounts that try and make you click on links in their bios and if you click on them your product could either be infected with a malware or they could hack into your account and essentially be you for however long they have your account for. These people are the type of people you must look out for when using social media. I feel as if this project made me into an even better writer because of all the confusion there was in the beginning. Going from not having a clue to what I was doing to creating a pretty good power point, I feel as if this project really pushed me to see what I could do as a writer. So, I learned that I could do a lot more than I initially thought I could and since it was a group project, I was able to learn some stuff from me group mates and all the great work that they were able. As a side note that’s another thing, I liked about this project was the fact that it was a group project.  I’ve always liked working in groups because the more people you have working on a project the better ideas you get and that allows for you to feed off of those good ideas and really put something special together.

The third and final thing I wanted to talk about was the transition that we all had to make at the halfway point if this semester. I think when we all started to see COVID-19 get bad here in the states we could all see it coming we just didn’t know when. So, when the decision was made to close the campus and go completely online I was kind of mad at first because I had never taken an online class and don’t prefer them so that’s why I never sign up for them. I was especially concerned with this class because of the way we had operated thus far in the classroom. I knew that if things were confusing to me in the classroom than they will be ten times more confusing online. But as these online classes began, I slowly began to realize that this was major for the teachers as well and they were some new to the whole online thing too. So, I realized that we were all in this together and it was just going to take some time to readjust but sooner than later we would be alright. So, here we are with about a week and a half left in the semester and it has all worked out especially in this class. This is not at all how I expected my fourth and final semester at Blue Ash to end but I’m not mad at how it all ended. So, as I continue to look forward and wonder if things will go back to normal soon, I’m not sure but one thing I do know for sure is that the teachers here at UC Blue Ash really made this transition from in class to online a lot easier than I thought it was going to be and for that I am grateful.

So, in conclusion I felt as if the profile and the collaborative photo caption were two of the toughest assignments, we had all semester. They really pushed the boundaries on what I can and can’t do when it comes to my writing skills. But I am grateful for them because from all the struggle and confusion I feel as if I really did become a better writer throughout this semester and that was my number one goal from the start of the semester. Also, we went through one of the strangest and most challenging things a university could do and that is completely close. The teachers were able to keep us always focused and on task through the whole rest of the semester. For that I am grateful for and will always remember my crazy sophomore year of college and all the surprises that came with it.

Returning to Readings (Friday Post #9)

Dru Smith

  1. “No one could see the colour blue until modern times”

Summary:  This reading was about the fact that there are no writings about the color blue in the old times. They would never mention it so we can assume that they couldn’t see the color. But I don’t seem to understand that because science says that we should be able to see the color blue so it kind of confused me. All in all it was a very interesting read.

Response: So as I was reading this article it never really gives us a clear and definitive reason as to why they couldn’t see the color blue. I have a feeling they really don’t know whether or not they could see it. So it makes you wonder if these people actually couldn’t see the color blue. I couldn’t imagine going outside and not seeing the sky as blue. So what could they have possibly seen it as? A cool grey or something even more weird?

  1. “How Language Shapes our Perception of Reality”

Summary: In this article it basically talks about if you speak another language do you perceive life differently. If you speak English or Russian will you see me as different just because we can’t understand each other? It gave a great example about how Russians have many different words for the color blue. We Americans only have one so are they more advanced than us because they have multiple words or do we just have a more simple life.

Response: I felt that this article was very interesting because it takes a whole new perspective from life in the form of language. I feel as if speaking a whole different language can allow you to see life from a whole different perspective. I see this as a possibility because if you can speak another language then you are truly embracing a whole other culture. So you can feel their culture flowing through you as you speak their language. Also by speaking another language you become even smarter than your average persson. This can also help you in almost everything you do in life.

  1. “Discourse Community”

Summary: In this article we were explained what a discourse community was. It basically states that it’s a group o0f people that find a common interest in one thing and are able to bond over that topic. For example I think of video game players. They are a very tight knit community and love and enjoy what they do on a daily basis.

Response: I think that discourse communities are very important in day to day life. It’s important for people to find a group that they feel they belong to and can have a fun time bonding with these people. I almost compare it to find the right friend group in high school. You need to find the right friends because your best high school friends can be the people that are with you the rest of your life. So with these discourse communities I feel it is the same premise and guidelines. Once you find the right discourse community you will feel right at home.

  1. “Twelve Words”

Summary: This article is about the trials and tribulation of a set of twins. One was normal and the other had a severe disability. The one brother loved his brother very much even though he was so different. It’s a heartwarming story that will have you almost feeling bad for them but in the end it is a bittersweet story because he was able to live a happy life with the people that loved him the most.

Response: I like stories like these because it shows what type of love is truly able to give to people. Not all people with disabilities get the love and affection they deserve but we see a family here that broke all of those stereotypes. He was able to live his life with the best people around him and enjoyed it. He obviously needed help with everything but that didn’t bother them; they accepted it. So we need to see more stories like this because it shows the love all people deserve.

Life During the Pandemic

I remember first hearing about the Coronavirus back in December of 2019 and didn’t think much about it. I thought it was going to be one of those small little viruses that we see pop up here and there and we would have a solution to the problem. Well here I am in my bed writing this paper due to the fact that this disease has closed all schools, bars, restaurants, and any other non-essential business. Looking back on all that has transpired over the last couple weeks I don’t see this going away any time soon either. I’ve been looking at all the data and estimates that the professionals are giving us, and I don’t like what I see. They’re saying we won’t have a vaccine for another 12-18 months and in the worst possible scenario we could lose from 100,000-240,000 American lives. Now don’t get me wrong they did say that this was the absolute worst thing possible, but it is still possible, nonetheless. So, my fear is that it will take a long time for this to go away.

As for me on a personal level my life hasn’t really changed much since the start of the pandemic. Other than taking all my classes online my job is still operating as UPS is seen as an essential job and I still work 5 days a week. Which is awesome because I still have rent due at the end of each month and will be really relying on those weekly paychecks. But as for life at work I have seen a slight difference, for example they are no longer letting 2 people load in the same trailer because they don’t want to be held accountable if anyone was to get sick during this time. Which makes sense because as a company they still need to operate but also need to look after the wellbeing of its employees. Also, I’m seeing a lot more medicine being shipped in these last couple weeks. They come in these styrofoam boxes and in one night it felt like I scanned over 500 of them. Now was the number probably that high, no, but it felt like it. Also, with less boxes through because of businesses not ordering anything because they are closed or just simply because Americans are staying home and don’t need as much, we have lost some hours of work time. On a normal week we don’t get out of there until around 10:30-11:00. But, now with all of this going on we are seeing less boxes come through our warehouse and that is causing us to leave 30 minutes and sometimes up to an hour earlier. It might not seem like much but in the end that is going to hurt my paycheck a lot and that is money I need for rent. That’s probably the main thing that is affecting me during this outbreak.

As for a more personal perspective I worry about my family that lives up in Lima, Ohio. The virus hasn’t really affected that part of Ohio that much, but I know it is going to make its way up there soon enough. My grandma lives in a nursing home and has been in quarantine almost the entire time. Nobody is allowed into her room at all times, not even my mom to go see her. They had to set up a skype call just so my mom could see her and talk to her. As for my parents my mom works within the school system so currently she isn’t doing much but she is still required to work at least 4 hours a day from either our home or she can go into the office if she wants to. As for my dad he works at a refinery and they definitely can’t so he is currently working just like me during this pandemic but is doing everything he can to stay safe.

So, in conclusion I feel as if the pandemic we are living through right now is something that will not be going away anytime soon. This will be the new norm within this country especially if people can’t follow the guidelines the government is trying to put in place to keep the people safe. I will continue to keep up with all the new information that is being put out there for the public and will continue to do everything I can to be safe. I recommend everyone else to do the same thing in these hard times.

Reflection on the process

The process in which I took for writing this paper was very simple and effective. I simply took my experiences that I knew of for my time during the pandemic and added them into my paper. I also took some facts that I had read about in the news and added them to make it more interesting. I then thought I should write about my family cause other than yourself I feel as if you should definitely be thinking about your family’s safety during these tough times.

Midterm Reflection Final Draft (Friday Post #7)

Midterm Reflection

So, in this English I came into the class nervous because English has always been one of my worst subjects in school. So, my first English class I took freshman year was pretty easy and I was happy with my performance. Compared to this class it has been a little more complicated with more work added and more complicated assignments. We have done two main projects in this class so far, the profile and the photo caption group assignment. The profile was very interesting to me because I was able to profile one of my best friends and was able to tell his story through my eyes. I think that the story I was able to tell with the profile was something that a lot of different college students could read and feel some type of connection to it. But with the photo caption group project I feel as if we as a group were able to really come together and put a very well-done project together. We were able to take social media and split it up into completely different subjects but still create a project that complimented each other. So by being able to do this I feel as if my writing has already improved by so much in the first 6 to 7 weeks of this course.

As for what the Activist is, I have an understanding that it is a place where amateur writers such as myself have a chance to put their writing out there for other college students to read. Even if it’s not the best writing, people won’t care because they know these are other college students just like them and everybody has learning curves when it comes to writing. Writing isn’t something that people can just be amazing at right away, it takes a deep understanding of the English language to really become a great writer. As for a discourse community this is where people can come together to write about certain things, and they all pick a certain genre. Now people might think of genre as fiction or nonfiction, but for this example genre can be almost anything because it stands for what you are talking about and what your subject is. This allows you to have a variety of options when it comes to thinking of something to write for the community because you can pick something that really interests you and maybe a lot things haven’t been written about that topic. So, it allows for you to be unique and let people really see who you are as a writer. So, the things we have done to relate to the discourse community and genre are the projects we have done so far. The profile was something that people could read in a certain subject but if they didn’t want to read a profile they could have easily gone onto another part of the Activist and read about something else if they wanted. As for the genre portion the photo caption project really ties into that because it allowed us to pick whatever we wanted to talk about and how we wanted to do it. This freedom allows us to make an even better project because we have the freedom to do what we want so we won’t get bored with a topic that someone else assigned to us. That’s how we can relate our projects to the discourse community and genre in this class.

As we dig even deeper into this subject that we call genre and discourse community we begin to see a pattern with what we have done so far. I look back on the Friday posts as something that has become very useful for me in forming all of my thoughts before I truly begin to get all of my main ideas out on paper. We have done a total of 7 Friday posts I believe and all of them have provided me with enough practice and effort that has really helped me become a better writer within this class. I feel as if doing the Friday post are an essential part if this class as well because they are a main stepping stone into getting my papers and projects ready for my final draft and ultimately publication. When it comes to publication, I know that my papers have to be perfect and I don’t believe that I have written a perfect paper yet in this class. So, by doing the Friday posts I feel as if they are setting me up to eventually write the perfect paper that I am hoping to write by the end of this semester. Other small things that we do throughout the semester that really help me out are the in-class journals that we do. These are a small and short part of the class but I feel as if the in depth questions that you ask us really help us with the overall process of thinking about how we can get our ideas flowing and even evaluate who we are as a writer and how we are continuing to get better. It’s these little things that I feel have really helped me throughout this first part of the semester that have allowed me to be successful in this class and will continue to help me be successful so that way I can become the best writer I can and be able to get to be able to write that perfect paper. So, in conclusion I feel as if the profile that we have done, and the group presentation have allowed us to work on our group skills and our writing skills. These two big projects have allowed us to tie in genre and discourse community into one and allowed us to work together on something that turned out to be a great project. But also, we have learned about the Activist and all the great stuff that comes with it. The Activist is something that we will all use within this class and is something that can allow us to show our work off to the public community of UCBA, and I have come to the conclusion that allowing people to see your work is very valuable to me because that’s how you get constructive criticism is the best way to gain information on how to improve my writing. Finally, I discussed how the little things allowed me to gain knowledge as a writer such as the Friday posts and the in-class journals have helped me become a better and more knowledgeable writer. That’s what we have done the first half of the semester and can’t wait to see what we learn in the second half of the semester.

Midterm Reflection Rough Draft (Friday Post #6)

So in this English I came into the class nervous because English has always been one of my worst subjects in school. So my first English class I took freshman year was pretty easy and I was happy with my performance. Photo Caption List Overview (Friday Post #5 Part 2)

Photo Caption Overview

For the strengths of our photo caption list I believe that the one thing that we have going for us is the relatability of our topic. Everyone that will read our photo caption list has or used social media in their lives and will continue to use it because that is the society that we live in today. I would say some of the weaknesses of our photo caption list is that we are very limited in the options that we can choose from in the forms of social media we could choose from. There’s really only 4 main social medias to choose from and then we had to add in Tinder to round out our 5 social medias. Another weakness I feel that we have is that maybe some of the people that read our photo caption list might not use certain social medias that we have but hopefully it’s the younger generation that reads our photo caption list. The logic behind our order of the social media is that we looked at each social media and determined which one had the ability to show your message to a lot of people quick and fast. So we determined that Twitter was the best form of social media and Tinder was the worst one for businesses. My favorite element of our photo caption list is that we have included great reasons as to why each social media is placed on the list in our top 5. Now if we had to cut one form of social media from our list it would have to be Tinder, Facebook, and Snapchat, these 3 forms of social media are not as useful to businesses as Instagram and Twitter. Now on the other hand if we had to add  forms of social media it would have to be Linked In and Pinterest for me because there’s really no other popular forms of social media that people use

The profile articles that we created are about social media and I think by splitting into two groups and doing separate things I think it allowed us to make more in depth answers for our photo caption list. This also allowed us to look at the 5 social medias that we chose, to look at them from different perspectives and allowed us to have some great diversity within our photo caption list even though we are talking about the same thing. As far as our collaborative work so far I feel as a group we have worked together well and have been communicating throughout the entire process of this project thus far. We have selected the main social medias that we will be working with and have described them each in a manner in which we are happy with. Working as a group helps us work individually because as a group we can give each other ideas that can help produce better quality products for each of us. This will then allow us to produce even better work as a group to bring the best possible article for the people to read once we publicate the piece for the community to read. That’s how I feel our photo collaboration list has gone so far.

Photo Caption List Draft (Friday Post #5 Part 1)

Top 5 Social Medias for business use

  1. Twitter – Many users and with retweets and likes, thousands of people could see your tweets in a matter of minutes. Also twitter is very self personalized and allows for you to talk/blog about whatever you want to so you can let all those people know directly what you are trying to sell/tell them. Companies can tweet back at customers as if they were friends rather than a seller to buyer interaction.
  2. Instagram – Instagram is very much based on strictly how many people see and like your account. So  Instagram helps when you have a very good marketing team that allows people to like your pictures. Instagram even allows you to tag the links directly to the product you are promoting. Companies pay for pop-up ads that will show on a person’s news feed and also when a person is viewing their followers stories.
  3. Facebook – Now as for Facebook its platform for the older generation in general but with 2.37 billion users Facebook still proves to be a very reliable source for businesses to promote themselves to all kinds of people. Also people on Facebook don’t seem to care about likes and other stuff that twitter and Instagram promote so it allows for people to just focus on what they want to post and care about. This allows for business to promote the stuff they want to and try to target the specific group that they want to target.
  4. Snapchat- Companies advertise in between stories of your friends and in between stories on the discovery page. They advertise on the discovery page. They advertise through snapchat filters.
  5. Tinder – Tinder on the other hand is definitely the least favorable form of social media for businesses to try and promote themselves. This social media app is used for people to try and connect with other people. So of all the social media that we chose to do obviously Tinder has to be the 5th ranked because of the limited ads that they even have and obviously this is because of the limited ads and the fact that people aren’t there to see things like that.

Hey y’all it’s Sondos– I’m just going to list what I believe are the 5 most toxic social media platforms here so I don’t mess with anything:

  1. Snapchat- Least harmful, Only public thing is stories, everything else is in chat. You have to add to see.  Snapchat also has the option of private stories, so ultimately you can pick and choose who you want to view your content.
  2. Tinder- Dangerous, Not meeting expectations ( based on looks, not personality) Easy to lie on. Catfishing
  3. Twitter –  FAKE VS REAL NEWS No shame. Easiest platform to hide behind an anonymous user and bully. Specifically stan twitter. Mediocracy
  4. Facebook- fake accounts, share what you want, easy to fight on, lots of drama.
  5. Instagram – based solely on image, self esteem, comparing, (REFER TO PARAGRAPH )

The first four social media sites have pretty similar reasons why they can be pretty toxic in our lives. Although technology has certainly enhanced our lives in a certain way, ultimately there are some things we can do without. One of the main issues about social media, particularly Instagram,  is that people look like they have a better life than they really do. People are posting specifically about happy times and in many cases they modify their pictures to appear better looking, and if not modifying certain pictures, people are still selecting the “best picture.” Whether that’s best lighting, best angle, etc. From the constant presentation of happy people, from good looking people, is the birth of comparing oneself to a certain SNS profile. That ultimately lowers one’s self-esteem because then they may not believe they’re good enough which can lead to all kinds of mental health issues. People generally think of themselves relative to others, it’s a way of constantly rebaselining our expectations. It gives the quote “Comparison is the thief of joy.” by Theodore Roosevelt a whole new perspective. The reason I pointed out Instagram is because essentially, for many people, is that this social media platform is giving them the opportunity to be their own PR agent and because of that, they tend to lean towards the more glamorous outlook. The likes, comments, shares, etc. that someone receives suddenly becomes addicting and for many, it’s like they feed off of it and this is toxic in so many ways because once someone is chasing the responses they’re receiving on their posts, they’re gonna be hungry for more and more. Eventually, that may lead to being too obsessive about perfecting the persona you’ve put out that everyone seems to love and essentially lose yourself. It’s almost like they don’t want to live in the reality, in the real world, but rather they want to interface with this personally created world through their social media pages. Like living in a simulation. In conclusion WE’RE LIVING IN THE MATRIX LMFAO.

Reflection on my Profile (Friday Post #4 Part 2)

The audience for my profile in my opinion is either current college students or high school students that are about to go into college. I feel like this story could be something that these students read and reflect on it themselves. The story could allow people to reconsider where they will go to college and find a university that best fits them. I think my article plays a part in the UCBA community discourse because to allows students to relate to a story like this because all college students struggle at times when it comes to college and it’s nice to relate to someone else. I think it reflects the values of the community because I am trying to tell one of my friends story and it allows others to read it so they can get to know his story too.

As for the process of drafting and revising my paper it was a very simple process in which I use for every one of my papers. Except this time I added the element of doing an interview with this paper so I feel as if it went even smoother than some of my other papers. I have allowed my peers to look over my paper and give me some criticism and was able to use the information they gave me to produce a pretty solid profile in my opinion. No I don’t think that my paper is ready for publication nor do I think I want it to be published and put out into the public. I don’t feel as if my writing is good enough to be put out for the whole university to read. Those are my thoughts on how writing this paper went.
