Rough/Revised Versions of Profile (Friday Post #4)

ROUGH DRAFT

Everything highlighted are things that I changed in my final draft.

Darius Hairston

For this profile I have choose to do one of my best friends since grade school, and now we are both trying to take on this thing called college together. I have chosen to do Darius because he has a really interesting story when it comes to his college career thus far and he’s only in his second year. In his first three semesters of college he has attended three different colleges, Xavier University, Ohio State University at Lima, and now the University of Cincinnati. Most people wouldn’t have the guts to do something like that, it takes a lot of different steps to transfer from colleges and he was willing to do this on two separate occasions in back-to-back semesters.

Separated my paper at this point after I wrote my rough draft to make it not as choppy.        So I wanted to sit down with him and ask him how he was able to stay focused with all that other stuff happening outside of the classroom. So I began by asking him why he chose to take the route he did, and he answered with, “I didn’t really choose to go to three colleges in three semesters.” I can see where this is coming from because nobody really plans on going to that many colleges, but sometimes you just have to find the right fit and everything like that (cut that). You have to make sure that you can enjoy your time in college while getting the best education possible. I continued the interview by asking him how going to all these different universities has helped his college experience, “I met a lot of people, and I (add that) was surrounded by a group that I wasn’t familiar with.” This perfectly describes what he went through going to all these universities. He was able to meet new people and even hangout with some of the people back home when he went back to the OSU branch in Lima. Finally I decided to ask him which college gave him the best experience so far, “I’d have to say Xavier taught me the most, maybe not school wise but in life.” This quote tells me that he learned a lot from his time in Xavier but it just wasn’t the spot for him now he is at UC and I think that UC is the (add that) spot where he will be able to finish his education.

Profile Drafts

Stolly Insurance

In my home town there is a family name that a lot people know about and it is very easy to know them because I see their commercials all of the time and live with one myself. The Stolly’s have been a big part of the Lima history and their ties to Lima run very deep. So the Stolly Insurance company in Lima, Ohio is something that almost all Lima people know about and know a lot of the members personally because they are so involved in the community. I’ve known the Stolly’s my whole life and they have always welcomed me into their home with welcome arms as a friend. They make you feel like family which is something you always want to look for in the quality of any business. You want to know that you are in good hands and that you are working with trustworthy people especially if it is something as important as the things you are trying to insure incase anything was to happen to your stuff. Since I personally know someone related to the company I was able to ask them what they thought about the company that his family runs. So I asked Mr. Stolly what he thinks that the Stolly Insurance company has done over the years for the community of Lima, he said. “They know that the insurance business so they’re always looking for ways to help you and they’re always there for you”. So as I have gathered the information on this profile I am noticing a common theme within this company, they are community orientated and are always looking to help the community in many different ways. So in my opinion if you are in the areas where this Insurance group is located I would recommend looking into them because they sound like good people and will be there for you when you need them.

Profile Brainstorming (Friday Post #2)

List of Possible Profiles

  1. My friend Darius Hairston, has been to tree universities in 3 semesters.
  2. A non profit organization member, could ask them why they do what they do.
  3. Talk to someone in admissions, could ask them what they all look for when admitting people into the college.
  4. Interview a professor in my major, could talk to them about why they chose what to do and how they were able to accomplish those goals.
  5. My brother Kyle Smith, currently in culinary school and is going to graduate this semester and would like to know about his experience in school in North Carolina.

For The Activist to profile a particular person, group or organization I feel like they have to be interesting and be able to be the type of person that can help the community and others in the community. I feel like the Activist is still a professional newspaper in a sense that it’s a voice for college kids to get their words out there and allow people to see what they can do. As each person begins to brainstorm more and more I feel it is important to remember that you are looking for people that have either impacted you or the community that you are involved in. I would be looking for someone that has an interesting story and would be the right person for a good profile. I think the profiles shape the community of UCBA because it shows off the people that are behind the scenes at the branch campus. I think people sometimes think that just because it’s a branch campus there isn’t that many people help to run the campus. But in reality there are many people that put their time and effort into making Blue Ash run as smoothly as possible. Also these profiles could be something that people could end up really enjoying to read and could actually end up getting some useful information and be able to read some very interesting stories that people could generally great to read. I also feel it shapes the way that we can grow as writers and advance through the class. I feel as if doing a profile like this would be good for my first assignment in this class because it could be a nice intro to the class and could allow me to advance my writing in the direction that I want it to go in.

I think one of my many chooses my favorite one I could do the one about my friend Darius. I think his story is very interesting and could really shed light onto what made him decide to leave not one but two colleges and end up at UC, where he is currently in his second semester. I think the profile could be very interesting and allow my friend Darius to share his story. So in conclusion I feel as I am on my way to completing this profile and first assignment. I still have a long way to go but I feel like I understand the concept and am looking forward to taking on this challenge.

Annotated Articles (Friday Post #1)

https://www.businessinsider.com.au/what-is-blue-and-how-do-we-see-color-2015-2

The thing that interested me the most about the article on the color blue is that so many cultures made no reference to the color at all. It was weird to think about people just not seeing a color that we see in everyday life. Another thing that I found really interesting about this article is that fact that the color isn’t even mentioned in the certain texts, it’s like to them the color wasn’t even a thing. Which I’m pretty sure is impossible because we get to see colors through light and they still had light back then to see the colors. In terms of relationship between languages it shows that all of these cultures were seeing the same things and all thought the same way. Even though they were in different regions of the world they still we having the same experiences with the color blue. But to me the people back then just didn’t have a word for it. I think they still saw the color they just didn’t recognize it and maybe they just began to ignore it.

My experience with journalism is very little in today’s world. One of the purest forms of journalism we see today is the newspaper and I don’t even read the newspaper my parents get everyday. I mean I’ll look at the sports and read the scores of the local games every now and then but I never read any of the stuff. I personally just think it’s boring and I don’t really think it’s interesting enough to read. But maybe I should start to care about this stuff a little more because it is my community and I should be more invested into what is going on and the things I could possibly impact myself. The new models that were proposed in this article could be the things that get journalism back to some form of popularity. They see themselves as people in the same group as teachers and other community officials. They are trying to give information to the people in their community and let people know all the good and bad things going on in the community. So in my personal opinion I don’t think that journalism will make a roaring comeback in the United States and become widely popular again but I think people should appreciate journalists more than they do now.

To me a community discourse is a group of people that come together and write about topics that they all have in common. They can either get together or they can just join a reddit group chat and talk about things that they all have in common. Personally I understand what the word means and how to use it but it is also a new term to me and I’m glad I can easily understand this topic. UCBA can definitely be considered a community discourse because we are all in the same boat by attending a branch campus. The branch campus is just completely different from a main campus not just because of the numbers but because of the relationship with teachers and your other classmates. Branch campuses allow for more one on one with these people so it could allow for a better college experience for some people.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
